Oregon Seeks Bird City USA Designation

OREGON — The Oregon City Council discussed efforts to earn a Bird City USA designation on Wednesday, highlighting the city’s existing wildlife and environmental programs. Caleb Jenks and Tom Pacey said the city mostly needs to document bird-friendly initiatives already underway by local groups and host an event for World Migratory Bird Day in May. Last year’s bird tour identified 43 species in one morning, and next year’s event will be held at Park East with binoculars and educational materials provided by the park district. Public works and sustainability efforts, including planting 75 native trees, cleaning up the Rock River, and adding native flowers at the solar farm, will also support the application, which officials hope to submit by December.
