ROCHELLE – City officials provided an update last Monday night on cleanup efforts following an incident this past June in which a Rochelle Municipal Utilities pole and transformer fell into the Spring Lake waterfall area. Flagg-Rochelle Park District Superintendent Brent Boardman said soil samples taken after the spill found mineral oil contamination, prompting a $73,937 cleanup approved by the city in September. Additional samples have been sent to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. At the Rochelle City Council meeting Monday night, the city announced that on October 23rd the IEPA said no further cleanup is needed.
RMU has already installed a new transformer on a raised pad, and the city plans to restore the waterfall area and repair fencing once the project is completed, hopefully by year end.
