New Diverging Diamond Interchange Opens at I-39 and U.S. 20 in Cherry Valley

CHERRY VALLEY — A new diverging diamond interchange between Interstate 39 and U.S. 20/Harrison Avenue opened Monday in Cherry Valley, replacing a cloverleaf design to improve traffic flow and reduce potential collision points for more than 50,000 daily vehicles, including nearly 15,000 trucks. The $44.2 million project includes bike and pedestrian paths and upgraded lighting, and is part of a larger $302.4 million reconstruction of I-39 between U.S. 20 and Blackhawk Road. The interchange is the eighth diverging diamond in Illinois and the first in the Rockford area, with additional work on I-39 and U.S. 20 planned through 2028 under the state’s Rebuild Illinois program.
