SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Corrections is launching a pilot program providing free phone calls to individuals in custody at correctional facilities across the state. Beginning Nov. 3, each person in custody will receive 775 free domestic phone call minutes, valued at about $6.20 per month, to contact loved ones. The program uses a phone dialer app on tablets already in use for mail scanning, which has faced scrutiny for delays. International calls can be made at a reduced minute rate, and unused minutes will not carry over. The pilot is set to run through June 2026, with IDOC reviewing usage and costs during the trial period.
