Report Ranks Illinois Among Most Indebted States With $222 Billion In State Debt

CHICAGO – A new report from Reason Foundation shows that Illinois’ state government has $222 billion in debt, third-most among all 50 states. With $17,300 in state debt per person, the state ranks fifth in per capita debt. When including the debt of local governments and school districts, Illinois’ total state and local debt rises to more than $407 billion, the fourth-highest in the nation.
