OREGON – A new monument honoring former Illinois Governor Frank O. Lowden will be dedicated Friday at 4:30 p.m. on the Ogle County Courthouse lawn. Stacey Flanagan, president of the Governor Lowden Memorial Committee, said the project began when her fifth-grade teacher suggested honoring Lowden.
“We finally got the money raised and got it finished. It’s all set,” said Flanagan.
The black stone monument, which cost about $20,000, includes a portrait and summary of Lowden’s accomplishments, including his work on Mount Rushmore and funding the Black Hawk Statue at Lowden State Park.
“What’s on that stone isn’t even a drop in a bucket for what he did for Ogle County and the city of Oregon…we just kind of wanted to give some history, local history, because it’s really not taught in the schools,” she noted.
