Byron Council Approves First Reading on Expansion for Prairie Materials (VCNA)

BYRON — The Byron City Council approved the first reading of a map amendment and special use permit for Prairie Materials (VCNA) to expand its sand and gravel mining operation at 8128 North Walnut Street. The request includes rezoning the property from industrial to heavy industrial and seeking setback variances on the east, north, and south sides. Company representatives emphasized the expansion involves no blasting and that existing access points would remain unchanged. Prairie Materials, which acquired Rogers Materials in May, operates nearly 100 sites across Illinois and Indiana and employs about 1,800. A final vote is expected in two weeks.
