West Nile Virus Detected in DeKalb County as Mosquito Season Begins

SYCAMORE – DeKalb County is among 17 in Illinois where the state health department has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in mosquito samples, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. No human cases have been reported yet in 2025, but officials warn that mosquito season is underway and emphasize prevention during National Mosquito Control Awareness Week, June 15-21. Last year, Illinois saw 69 human cases and 13 deaths from the virus. Health officials urge residents to reduce standing water, use insect repellent, and report mosquito breeding sites to local authorities.
