Schewe Family Establishes Charitable Fund Through DeKalb County Community Foundation

SYCAMORE — Dan and Kathy Schewe have established the Dan and Kathy Schewe Family Fund, a donor advised fund through the DeKalb County Community Foundation, to support charitable organizations in DeKalb County and create a long term tradition of giving. The couple, both University of Michigan graduates, built careers in education and related fields, with Kathy teaching elementary and prekindergarten students for 33 years and Dan working in junior high education before moving into employee benefits consulting and later cofounding a firm before retiring. They moved to DeKalb in 2013 to be closer to family and remain active in the community through nonprofit boards and church involvement. Foundation officials said the fund will allow the family to recommend grants to local nonprofits and continue charitable giving across generations through their children and grandchildren. The couple said they chose to move their giving locally after previously using a national provider, citing a desire to strengthen organizations in the area. DeKalb County Community Foundation leaders said the fund supports both donor goals and local nonprofit work across the county.
