BYRON — A flood warning is in effect as the Rock River approaches or reaches flood levels in low-lying areas, and the Byron Public Works Department is offering a limited supply of sand and empty sandbags at the wastewater treatment plant, 504 E. Blackhawk St., just east of Hairy Cow Brewing Company, for residents needing to protect their property. Officials said the river is at 13 feet and is expected to crest at 14 feet by Sunday morning or early afternoon, April 19, which is considered moderate flooding stage, and noted one shovel is available on site but residents should bring their own tools. The Rock River reached 13.8 feet in Byron on July 16, 2024, and those who had flooding issues at that time may see similar conditions, while the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration classifies the current forecast as minor flooding and continues to update river levels multiple times daily through its National Water Prediction Service.
