SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is encouraging residents to get outside and explore state park trails during National Trails Day on Saturday, June 6. Special events will be held at four Illinois locations, including guided hikes, self guided walks, bog tours and a scavenger hunt challenge. Participants who complete a hike will receive a special “Hiked It and Liked It” sticker. IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie said the event is an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the outdoors and help care for public trails. Activities include the Hiking Boot Challenge at Giant City State Park, a self guided hike at Lincoln Trail State Park, guided bog tours at Volo Bog State Natural Area and a two mile guided hike at McHenry Dam. Some events require advance registration, while others are open throughout the day.
