ROCHELLE — The Indiana Municipal Power Agency gave a presentation to the Rochelle City Council Monday night, outlining rising wholesale power prices and tightening supply in the regional electricity market. Senior Vice President Kyle Brouillette detailed that capacity prices are projected to jump from about $29 per megawatt day in 2024-25 to over $329 for 2026-27 due to market reforms prompted by extreme winter weather events and changes in how power generation resources are credited. The presentation also noted growing electricity demand driven by data centers, electrification efforts, and manufacturing, along with delays in new power generator connections that contribute to higher prices. The agency provides planning and market operations support to Rochelle’s Municipal Utilities, helping manage power supply costs through contracts and local generation assets to shield residents from market volatility. The report included a 10-year forecast prioritizing nuclear, coal, gas turbine, and combined cycle generation as key energy sources moving forward.
