CHICAGO — Illinois officials are urging residents to take precautions as dangerously cold weather affects much of the state, with the National Weather Service reporting wind chills as low as negative 35 degrees and an extreme cold warning in effect until noon. Officials warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as ten minutes, while hypothermia and travel problems are also possible. The Illinois Tollway has activated 24 hour Zero Weather Road Patrols to assist stranded motorists and is advising drivers to remain in their vehicles and dial star 999 for help. State emergency officials say extreme cold will continue through the weekend in northern and central Illinois, while southern parts of the state could see heavy snow. Residents are encouraged to limit travel, dress in layers, keep vehicles winter ready, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
