Illinois Lawmakers Push Detention Center Ban

SPRINGFIELD –  Illinois lawmakers are pushing legislation designed to keep immigration detention centers out of certain areas of the state.  An Illinois House committee approved a measure that would ban immigration detention centers within 1500 feet of schools, churches, day care centers, cemeteries, public parks, forest preserves, private homes and public housing.  House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch and Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson testified in support of the bill.  Both represent the Broadview area, where an ICE processing center is located.
