CHICAGO — The Illinois Department of Insurance said last week that health insurance rates on the Get Covered Illinois Marketplace will increase an average of 28.8 percent for 2026, citing the expiration of federal enhanced premium tax credits, changes in federal rules, and inflation. The department said the rate hikes could be reduced by about 10 percentage points if Congress extends the tax credits, which helped about 90 percent of the 550,000 Illinois enrollees afford coverage last year. Nationally, marketplace insurers are raising premiums by about 20 percent on average for 2026, with many states seeing double-digit increases.
