BYRON — Byron City officials are discussing new rules for electric bikes as legislation is still being drafted. The issue was reviewed Wednesday night during the Byron Public Safety Meeting. Police, council members, and residents debated where e-bikes should be allowed, speed limits, and whether they should share paths with pedestrians. Some residents said they understand the need for regulation but want to continue using e-bikes for recreation and transportation in the community.
Byron Police Chief Jeremy Boehle said, “I think we’ve seen an explosion over the last two years. Two years ago I saw six young ladies on these e-bikes, and I knew it was gonna be the new thing for Byron. We all need to work together to come up with that specific agreement that we all see will work for every agency.”
Further meetings are expected before the council finalizes the rules.
