Creston Finalizes Farmland Return, Updates on Landfill Cleanup and Village Projects

CRESTON — Creston Village trustees finalized the transfer of farmland back to village ownership, resolving decades of negotiations related to the property and the nearby Rochelle landfill. The 111-acre property was originally sold 18 years ago and returned to the village at minimal cost as part of landfill closure agreements. Cleanup work is ongoing, including removal of fencing, brush, and berms, with some stockpiles remaining until the landfill’s post-closure period near 2040. The creek along the property was realigned and protected under environmental agreements, and the village will lease portions of the land for farming. Creston Village President Tom Byro also encouraged review of the village’s 20-year-old comprehensive plan ahead of upcoming community meetings.  In other business they approved up to $11,725 for electrical work on the water tower, and authorized a $254,759.60 payment to Martin Company for the storm sewer project with retainage held for final approval. Discussions continued on the placement of a new village digital sign and potential advertising to offset costs.
