Chicago Woman Sentenced In Federal Hate Crime Arson Case

CHICAGO — A 70-year-old Chicago woman has been sentenced to nearly three years in federal prison after throwing an incendiary device onto a neighbor’s porch because of the victim’s Venezuelan origin, according to federal prosecutors. Ana M. Hernandez pleaded guilty to unlawfully interfering with housing rights after admitting she threw a glass bottle filled with oil and a cloth onto a back porch on March 16, 2024, causing a fire but no injuries. Prosecutors say Hernandez later left a handwritten note on the landlord’s car telling the residents to leave the country. A federal judge sentenced Hernandez to two years and nine months in prison following the conviction announced by the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.
