SPRINGFIELD – The 2026 Illinois fall trout fishing season will open Saturday at 60 ponds, lakes and streams statewide, including five locations in northern Illinois. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources stocks more than 80,000 rainbow trout each year for the fall season through the Illinois Catchable Trout Program, which is funded by inland trout stamp sales. During the regular season, anglers may keep up to five trout per day and must have a valid Illinois fishing license and inland trout stamp. In the area, trout fishing will be available at Hennepin Canal Parkway in Bureau County, Apple River at Apple River Canyon State Park in Jo Daviess County, Illinois and Michigan Canal Lock 14 in LaSalle County, Pine Creek at White Pines Forest State Park in Ogle County and Centennial Park Pond in Rock Falls in Whiteside County. Anglers should check with individual sites for specific regulations and opening times because not all locations open at 5 a.m. on opening day.
