Suspect Flees Byron Traffic Stop; Swims to Rock River Island

BYRON — A suspect is in custody after allegedly fleeing from law enforcement Saturday afternoon, leading officers on a pursuit that ended in the Rock River. Authorities said the incident began as a traffic stop by Byron police, but the vehicle fled. The suspect was later located by the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office and again fled from deputies before stopping along Route 2 and running into the river. The suspect was apprehended without incident on a nearby island and was transported to a hospital for treatment of low body temperature. The Byron Fire Department assisted in the search. Officials said more details, including charges, are expected to be released Sunday.
