ROCHELLE – May marks Mental Health Month, a tradition dating back to its designation in 1949. Sinnissippi Centers Marketing Manager Andy Jackson explained that 1 in 5 American adults experience mental health issues, but over 50% don’t receive necessary treatment because of the way mental health is perceived.
“Stigma is a powerful negative or discriminatory barrier that can lead individuals to avoid or delay treatment. They might fear losing their job. They might fear it would impact a relationship, or they might even lose a relationship. And while stigma has been reducing over the years, I think we need to go further, and we do have a ways to go because it does prevent people from getting the treatment that they need and getting onto the path of recovery,” Jackson said.
He also noted resources are available at their website.
“You click on links at the top of the page when you get there. We even have a link to screenings for mental illness and other behavioral health care concerns right there. They’re free, confidential, and online right there on the links page at the top.”
