GENOA — Genoa-Kingston High School held a History Rocks assembly Thursday as part of a nationwide civics education tour organized by the U.S. Department of Education and the America 250 Civics Education Coalition. The event featured remarks from Erika Kirk, widow of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, and U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, along with content tied to Turning Point USA’s Club America student group. The assembly focused on American history and civic engagement but drew protests outside the school, with some community members and the local teachers union raising concerns about transparency, safety and political influence. District officials said attendance was voluntary and that hosting the event did not imply endorsement of any viewpoints, while police said peaceful protest was allowed.
