Illinois Ranks Near Bottom In 2026 Retirement Study

CHICAGO — Illinois ranked ninth from the bottom in a new 2026 study of the best and worst states to retire, according to an analysis released by CareScout that compared affordability, quality of life and health care across the country. The study reviewed nine data points in those three categories and placed Wyoming first overall, followed by New Hampshire and Vermont, while New Jersey ranked last due to high living costs and personal income tax burdens. CareScout reported that the findings come as the U.S. population age 65 and older continues to grow, reaching more than 61 million people nationwide, increasing the importance of where retirees choose to live.
