DeKalb Township Launches Tree Planting Program For America 250

DEKALB — DeKalb Township has announced a multi year effort to plant 250 trees across the township in recognition of the upcoming America 250 celebration. The program is being carried out in partnership with the Chicago Region Trees Initiative and will allow residents, businesses, nonprofits, and local taxing bodies to request free trees and shrubs for planting within the township. Requests for the spring planting season must be submitted by March 31, and trees and shrubs can be claimed at the township office between April 23 and May 15. Free mulch will also be available during pickup. The township will also host community planting events each year, with the first scheduled April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon at Elder Care Services where volunteers will help plant trees. Township officials say the effort is intended to expand the local tree canopy and improve air quality, shade, and soil conservation.
