BYRON — The Byron City Council approved several equipment purchases and discussed a range of city projects during its Wednesday meeting. The council approved around $1,500 for two radios and additional equipment upgrades, along with a separate purchase of an APX 8000 radio for about $5,000, replacing a previously planned $10,500 option for the Byron Police Department. Officials heard an update from Liz Hiemstra of the Ogle County Economic Development Corporation about the recent closing of Quality Metal and efforts to sell the property for possible redevelopment. The city is also considering appointing a new treasurer at a future meeting. In other business, the council plans to form a small committee to explore a mural project this summer. Byron Public Works reported that lead service line inspections are underway with about 50 of 200 lines completed.
