BYRON — The Byron City Council voted Wednesday to move forward with the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant project after receiving four bids that came in near or below expectations, including a low bid of $26.58 million from Whittaker Construction of Earlville, under the engineer’s $27.5 million estimate. The council approved a notice of intent to award as required by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, which must review the bid and loan agreement before a final contract award is considered at a future meeting. Construction is expected to begin in late spring or early summer.

“It’s been years in the planning and a lot of paperwork and, when we went out to bid, we got good bids back. Still a lot of money, but good bids. It’s good to be able to get this project going and hopefully start rebuilding the plant this summer,” Mayor John Rickard said.
