Sycamore Steam Show
The Sycamore Steam Show returns August 7–10, 2025, bringing four days of history, horsepower, and hands-on heritage to the Taylor Marshall Farm. Now in its 68th year, this beloved family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity to experience America’s mechanical past in motion—with live demonstrations, vintage equipment, and plenty of small-town charm.
The show features a massive collection of operating machinery from days gone by. Attendees can witness threshing and sawmill demonstrations, explore an extensive flea market, enjoy a daily parade showcasing beautifully restored equipment, and so much more.
A highlight of this year’s show is the 100th anniversary celebration of the show’s Erie Type “A” Steam Shovel—a century-old marvel of engineering still in operation today. One of only 5 and a half examples, this rare piece of American industrial history will be running throughout the weekend, giving spectators a chance to see it dig and swing just as it did in the 1920s.
“The Sycamore Steam Show is where generations come together to remember how things used to be built—and built to last,” said Charlie Hubbard, Northern Illinois Steam Power Club President. “We’re proud to celebrate our past while making new memories every year.”
The Sycamore Steam Show was started in 1957 by the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club, and has become one of the Midwest’s longest-running vintage machinery events. Held annually on the Taylor Marshall Farm, it is dedicated to preserving the history of steam and to provide education programs about steam power.
The Sycamore Steam Show is a true family affair, offering hands-on fun and excitement for kids of all ages. From the rumble of antique tractors to the whistle of steam engines, young visitors are captivated by the sights, sounds, and motion all around. It’s like an amusement park for farm kids—where the rides are barrel trains, the roller coasters are parade tractors, and the exhibits actually work.
Families can explore the grounds together, watch real steam-powered sawmills and threshing demonstrations, and take in the daily parade packed with vintage machinery. With plenty of space to roam, shaded seating areas, and a variety of food vendors and treats, it’s easy to spend the entire day making memories. Whether your kids are tractor-obsessed or just love being outdoors, there’s something around every corner to keep them smiling and engaged.
Beyond the fun, the Sycamore Steam Show is a living history lesson—an immersive opportunity for kids and adults alike to learn about how agriculture and machinery shaped our region. Through up-close demonstrations, volunteers bring the past to life, explaining how steam engines powered everything from farms to factories. Visitors can see century-old equipment in motion, ask questions, and gain a deeper appreciation for the innovation and hard work that built rural America. It’s the kind of hands-on education that sticks with kids long after the day is over—history, engineering, and farming all rolled into one unforgettable experience.
