Illinois Attorney General Joins Coalition To Defend Access To Birth Control

CHICAGO — Attorney General Kwame Raoul, along with 20 other state attorneys general, filed an amicus brief last week challenging Trump-era regulations that expanded religious and moral exemptions allowing employers to deny no-cost contraception coverage under the Affordable Care Act. The coalition urged the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit to uphold a lower court ruling that found the regulations unlawful, warning they could threaten contraceptive coverage for hundreds of thousands of women, shift millions in costs to individuals, and place financial strain on states providing replacement services. Officials said the rules would exacerbate racial, gender and income disparities, particularly for women living in areas with limited access to contraceptive care.
