Illinois Expands Property Tax Relief for Seniors

CHICAGO — Illinois seniors may now qualify for expanded property tax relief under the Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program following legislation signed by Governor JB Pritzker. The law raises income eligibility for the program, allowing more homeowners 65 and older who own and occupy their primary residence for at least three years to defer up to $7,500 per year or 80 percent of their home equity. Homeowners must have no outstanding property taxes or special assessments and maintain adequate fire or casualty insurance. The program takes effect for the 2025 tax year, and the deadline to apply is March 1, 2026. Eligible seniors can contact their local county collector’s office to apply or visit the Illinois Department of Revenue website for more information.
