Illinois Sheriffs Call for Changes to SAFE-T Act to Strengthen Public Safety

OREGON — Multiple Illinois sheriffs, including those in Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, are calling on lawmakers to revise the SAFE-T Act. They say provisions that limit pretrial detention and judicial discretion undermine public safety and victims’ rights. Gov. J.B. Pritzker recently indicated he is open to reviewing the law after a train attack in Chicago. The sheriffs want changes that expand judicial discretion, broaden detainable offenses, improve sentencing transparency, and give law enforcement tools to protect communities. The law, effective September 2023, eliminated cash bail and shifted pretrial detention decisions to judges. Sheriffs stress that lawmakers must collaborate with frontline officers to restore confidence in the justice system.
