CHICAGO — National Cholesterol Education Month raises awareness about controlling cholesterol to prevent heart disease and stroke. Adults are encouraged to get tested at least every five years. LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, can build up in arteries, while HDL, or “good” cholesterol, helps remove it. Maintaining healthy levels involves a balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding tobacco, and following medical guidance. Some people may also need medications such as statins to manage cholesterol and reduce heart disease risk.
